Help preserve Texas history by supporting Friends of the Texas Historical Commission
Spirit of Texas Program
Texas history is as vast as it is rich. From the long heritage and legacy of American Indians, the adventures of the first Anglos, the perseverance of African Americans from enslavement to settlers of Freedom Colonies, the cultural impact of Mexicans, and the history of Japanese immigrants during World War II—all have contributed to and shaped our idea of the Texas spirit today. Each new layer of history has made our heritage richer and more complex. It has necessitated a more nuanced telling of these stories, especially as, with time, generations become further removed from the events themselves. As Texas continues to grow and change, the need to preserve and promote its cultural heritage is increasingly critical. This is true not only so we ensure our history is not lost over time, but so that new Texans and future generations can find their place in history and become a part of the effort to preserve it.
Only through understanding and preserving our shared past wholly and authentically can we fully appreciate the world we live in today, and shape the one that our children and future generations will live in tomorrow. By donating to the Friends of the Texas Historical Commission (FTHC), you allow us to continue our work as a critical partner to the Texas Historical Commission—the state's historic preservation agency—ensuring that the real stories of real places are preserved for generations to come.
