Rebuilding the Caddo Mounds Historic Site
Tragedy Struck on April 13, 2019
On Saturday, April 13, 2019, a tornado devastated the Caddo Mounds State Historic Site. The visitors’ center was destroyed, and the Caddo Grass House was gone. Many guests were injured by the storm, and one visitor lost her life.

While the damage was extensive, the Caddo Mounds themselves, along with the site’s invaluable archeological and cultural history, were left untouched
The Texas Historical Commission is committed to rebuilding the museum and visitor center at Caddo Mounds as part of a larger Caddo Cultural Center project. The first phase of this project, the visitor center and museum, is already under construction with funds appropriated from the state legislature.
The second phase of the Caddo Cultural Center, the Education Center, requires private funding support to be completed. This building, once complete, will provide critical space for the Caddo “culture keepers”—members of the Caddo tribe—and the THC site staff to offer educational programming for schools and visitors at the State Historic Site.
